There are three main people that entrepreneurs are told to get when they start their business: an accountant, a lawyer, and an insurance agent. As one of Louisville's trusted tax relief experts I'm often asked if I know a good lawyer. Unfortunately for many people legal counsel is not something that they can fit into their budget so they just write it off as something out of their reach.
I was the same way as a young professional and even when starting my business. I felt like I could hold off on that part because of the cost. However that could not be further from the truth. As soon as you begin selling and going into contracts it is always best to seek legal counsel so you understand what you're signing.
If you're in Louisville, Kentucky and have ever asked me for legal advice then you already know my guest today. If not let me introduce my friend Mrs. Whitney Young, CEO of Witty by Design.
Whitney Young is a Louisville native, serial entrepreneur, devoted wife, and loving mother of two. As I mentioned before she is the CEO of Witty by Design and has been a consultant with LegalShield since 2013. She prides herself on operating with integrity at all levels of business, putting God first, and helping others connect to resources that can help them. She's a graduate of the University of Kentucky and member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. Today we will chat about LegalShield but Whitney will be back to tell us more about Witty by Design.
TB: What made you choose this industry?
WY: I’ve been partnered with LegalShield since 2013. I went into this industry because the services offered was something needed by everyone but not something that everyone was aware of. Most people, including myself at the time, felt that legal consult could only be accessed if you could afford it. This company made sure no one was priced out of the legal system. That is something I could get behind. I’ve always wanted to be an active resource for my community and LegalShield allows me to do that. From there I created Witty by design so I could share other beneficial products/services with my clients. As well as add a faith-based aspect to my business operations.
What keeps me in the industry is simply the need for what we offer. There is little alternative to a legal plan outside of paying the higher hourly costs normally associated with attorneys. There are few business entities that combine faith based practices into their business model. We exist to offer solutions to both.
TB: Why are you passionate about helping people and your community?
WY: I am passionate because my life and business are a result of compassion. There was always a mentor or support system available to continue to propel me forward or suggest resources and services that could help me. I want to provide that same support for other entrepreneurs and business owners. Running a business is tough but it’s a little easier if you don’t feel you are doing it alone. Helping people is just what I do. If we all did this how much better would the world be?
TB: Why is it good for business owners to have access to legal counsel?
WY: I think most people think you only need a lawyer when something goes wrong. If you get sued, some kind of legal dispute, etc. The reality is that as soon as you file for an LLC, Sole Proprietorship, S-Corp, etc you are a legally bound, operating entity that must adhere to all laws that pertain to you. Even if you are not aware of them. You will be held legally responsible and have to take account for whatever errors have occurred. Most business owners don’t have a legal background but are operating on a legal playing field by having a business. Legal counsel allows entrepreneurs to ensure they are making the best decision for their business. Not only re-actively but on proactive basis. Using a service like LegalShield allows them to do that affordably.
TB: It would be a much better world! What type of clients do you serve?
WY: All businesses. From startups with no employees to larger well-established companies with hundreds of employees. Our niche is businesses with 100 employees or less but we are flexible. If we can’t help you directly I am able to refer out to trusted partners as needed.
TB: What makes your company unique?
WY: LegalShield is unique because it levels the playing field by making legal consult easily accessible and affordable.
We have a very unique way of doing business and work to help our clients think outside the box to develop solutions to their problems. We pair strategic planning and resource matching with a faith-based approach.
TB: I often tell clients and prospects that I love to be a Rolodex of resources for them. I have found that to be true with you too. What is something someone should know before making an appointment with you?
WY: We offer solutions to fit every budget. If for some reason we can’t handle something in house we are able to refer out to our preferred resource partners to make sure the needs of every client are met.
TB: Beautiful! How have you helped your clients and others during these unsure times?
WY: Our goal during these times has been to just be available and be an active resource. Whatever was in our ability to do in order to help our clients cope and pivot during these times we’ve just tried to do. One specific way has been to relaunch our Virtual Networking Series. This allows entrepreneurs to stay connected while social distancing. Additionally, I wrote an article that was featured on Louisville’s Small Business Development Center website and Newsletter. I’ve done all these things simply to be a resource and provide a level of certainty during these uncertain times.
TB: Which by the way, if you're reading this and haven't participated in one of Witty by Design's Virtual Networking events you are missing out! It is far from the normal (boring) zoom meeting. It is very well coordinated and efficient.
What is your favorite quote that helps keep you motivated?
WY: “It’s a good day to have a good day."
TB: How can people connect with you?
WY: By email : hello@wittybydesign.com or 502-354-7842
TB: Do you have any events coming up that people can attend?
WY: Virtual Speed Networking. Ww2network.eventbrite.com
All other upcoming events will be posted on the Facebook page
TB: The next event is actually coming up this Saturday at 1 pm! Be sure to sign up asap before the spots fill up. Whitney thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and let the audience know about your services.
